A last minute dramatic increase of court fees of up to 600% is likely to leave vulnerable people without access to justice, including workers claiming compensation for injuries at work.
The government announced on Friday that the maximum fee for issuing a money claim worth more than £10,000 will be increased to 5% of the sum claimed, subject to a maximum fee of £10,000. The previous maximum fee to issue a claim was £1,920.
Niamh O’Brady, a Partner at OH Parsons LLP, comments; “Apart from those who are exempt, workers will be forced to pay these sums regardless of their means.
“How can that be right in circumstances when you’re trying to sue a wrongdoer?”
